PanCare4AYA is a European-funded research project that will develop an international clinical guideline for screening and follow-up of late effects of Adolescent and Young Adult (AYA) cancer, which will be implemented via a novel person-centred screening programme (AYA Cancer Survivor Screen). The project will improve the health and quality of life of survivors across Europe through better Survivorship Care.
AYA cancer survivors face a higher risk of health-related problems than their peers due to their cancer treatment. However, standardised Survivorship Care beyond five years post-diagnosis is still lacking across much of Europe. Most AYA cancer survivors are referred to general practitioners without a personalised plan for monitoring and managing late effects based on their specific risk profile.
The main aim of PanCare4AYA is to develop, test and scale-up evidence-based screening methods for the early detection of late effects in AYA cancer survivors as part of Survivorship Care to improve health and quality of life. In order to do this, PanCare4AYA will:
- Develop an international, evidence- and consensus-based guideline for AYA cancer Survivorship Care (screening and follow-up), which will be used to develop the person-centred AYA Cancer Survivor Screen programme.
- Develop digital and peer support tools for the AYA Cancer Survivor Screen programme.
- Conduct a multi-country implementation study to test the AYA Cancer Survivor Screen programme with 1,000 AYA cancer survivors in 11 European countries. The study will will look at effectiveness (healthcare delivery, screening-related health and feasibility), as well as the experiences of AYA cancer survivors and healthcare professionals with implementing the state-of-the-art screening programme within a range of different healthcare settings.
- Contribute to the ‘Quality of Life’ cluster for the Mission on Cancer, while also establishing links with other (EU) initiatives in AYA cancer Survivorship Care to maximise synergies.
- Develop and disseminate a Replication Toolkit to support uptake and scale-up of the AYA Cancer Survivor Screen programme, both in new clinics in the study countries and new countries.
- Communicate the importance of screening in AYA cancer Survivorship Care and disseminate the project results to key stakeholders to improve AYA cancer Survivorship Care across Europe.
